"I don't know if these are the absolute coolest things, but here are three things I appreciate in terms of what's happening today. Internationalism In electronic dance music more than other genres, the culture is international. The main reason for this is the performance mode; dj's playing tracks instead of bands playing live. A track can be produced in San Francisco in the afternoon, and debuted on a dancefloor in Tokyo that evening. Last week when I played at Qoöl, my set included tracks from every continent except Antarctica. Our record label, Loöq Records, has signed music from England, Northern Ireland, Spain, France, Slovenia, Turkey, Australia, Norway, Japan, and the US. Dancing/clubbing/electronic music is a universal language, like soccer. Unlike soccer, most genres of dance music have their origin in the US ... it's an export we can be proud of. Innovative software Even though there are still plenty of vintage analog synths in the mix, electronic music is made primarily with computers and software. There's some great stuff out there, and lots of it is free. Websites like KVR Audio are a good reference guide. Big hitters like Native Instruments in Germany and smaller groups of programmers like Ohmforce in France are writing code that generates some crazy noise. The brilliant artists on Loöq Records Shameless plug. Check out some of the insane talent we've signed at www.looq.com/music. Stomping dance tracks from Piece Process, strange grooves from Nero, left field pop from Superstars, progressive breaks from Dirtyhertz & Musselman. We sign them because we love the music. It's definitely not for the money!" -Jondi, aka JD Moyer, co-founder Loöq Records, and internationally acclaimed dance music artist and DJ. Loöq Records is a globally focused progressive dance music label founded by producers and DJ's Jondi & Spesh in 1998. Check out Loöq Radio at www.looq.com/podcasts. Jondi and Spesh also host Qoöl, a long running, world renowned San Francisco club night.
