"It’s more like what don’t the three have in common?
Let me illustrate with a sad-but-true riddle: What has 1,000 legs and two (breasts)? An Exodus show. That’s right, there are virtually no women there. (And take it from someone who knows, among the paltry number of women who show up, it is suspected many are the “working” type.) The same can be said for software marketing conventions. How long is the line to the ladies’ room at Oracle Open World? That’s a trick question. What line?
Technology moves fast. Sleep late one day in Silicon Valley and you have missed the launch of at least 25 new start ups. Metal moves fast: it seems as soon as the Anthrax reunion was up and running, the band had split again.
Then there is crisis communications. Both PR and speed metal are experts in this area. Ask the handlers of Mayhem, when it used pig heads and other animal parts to decorate the stage during a 2006 performance — a violation of the Swedish animal by-product regulation law. Try explaining that to the Swedish government in a positive light.
Technology and tech PR both have their ravenous gossip mongers. There is GigaOm, TechCrunch, ValleyWag and all have up-to-the-second stories about everything, mainly Google’s cafeteria menu. In metal, there is an equally industrious gossip hound who runs highly important news on Blabbermouth.net. If a metal band misses a show in Lithuania or a bass player whines that his drummer sucks, Blabbermouth has the story in seconds!
The Internet has moved in to a second phase; this is sometimes referred to as Web 2.0. Metal has moved to a second phase; old schoolers call it Nu Metal. They hate it."
